Urgent! Urgent! Urgent! Another aspect of our campaign is to lobby Government Office North West to 'call in' the planning application. This takes the decision out of the hands of the local authority. This is something that happens when there is a controversial application. To do this you need to write to Michael Morris

You can find sample call in letters in the downloads section of the website.
It helps if you copy the letter to your MP and Councillors (both on the Planning Committee and your local ones). PLEASE ARGUE IT IS CRUCIAL THAT: 1. The Derwent Holdings application to build another large superstore at White City (ref: 74483/FULL/2009) 2. Other supermarket proposals for example in Salford (two different applications were granted permission this week, including a Tesco mega store at West One) 3. Complications relating to school playing fields, local parks and the expansion of school buildings 4. Massive increases in traffic along A56
Must also be taken into consideration and therefore the Tesco application should be called in by the Secretary of State.

Because you wait for ages and then two come along at once.
As if a Mega Tesco weren't enough, now Sainsbury's are getting in on the act in North Trafford. They have applied for planning permission for a store of approx 97,262 sq ft* on the site of the old Homebase at White City. This is only half a mile away from the proposed Tesco site. We are opposed to this store for many of the same reasons as the Tesco, but unfortunately, as there is no 'change of use' for the site (from one retail use to another), we don't feel we have as good a chance of stopping it. We will continue to focus our energy on fighting the Tesco application, but we do encourage you to write to Trafford planning department and object to the Sainsburys as well, which could have an equal impact on shops in surrounding areas.
- do write and object as soon as possible using Planning application number 74483/FULL/2009

Tesco have submitted plans to build a MEGAstore of 166,847 sq ft (gross size) store on Chester Road opposite PC World in partnership with Trafford Council and Lancashire County Cricket Club.
Tesco already have planning permission to build a smaller store on the site, which at 48,000 sq. ft is a similar size to the new Sainsburys in Urmston and far bigger than Morrisons in Chorlton. Tesco have had this permission for over 5 years without action, so how much does Tesco really care about investing in our community?
A planning inquiry in 2006 upheld Trafford Council's refusal to grant permission to build a store of 88,095 sq. feet because of the excessive negative effect it would have on local shops and on our environment. Despite this, Trafford Council are now intending to sell public land to Tesco, the public money from which will then be handed to Lancashire County Cricket Club (a private members club), instead of directly benefiting local residents and local business.
