NEWS: Derwent to appeal over Tesco Decision PDF Print E-mail

Isle of Man-based Derwent Holdings will appeal against what it calls Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council's “inappropriate” decision to allow a 155,000 sq ft Tesco to be built next to the Old Trafford cricket stadium. Gerard Carney, a spokesman for Derwent Holdings, which is owned ...by veteran entrepreneur Albert Gubay, said: “We will lodge an appeal shortly. I am concerned that the cricket club redevelopment may get bogged down due to the crossfire between Derwent and Tesco over the coming months. This is avoidable if common sense prevails. It is unfortunate the matter will have to be referred to the Secretary of State to rectify an inappropriate decision, which has been reached for political, rather than planning, reasons.”

Parents and concerned residents are marching on Thursday March 18th from Losctock College to Trafford Town Hall to protest the closure of Lostock College to create an academy.

The plans are closely linked to the Mega Tesco - the land being sold to Tesco to build the Mega Store can only be sold if Lostock College and Stretford High School are closed and the Trafford College backed Academy goes ahead.

The march will begin at 15.45 at the clinic on Barton Road - come along and protest against the closure of Lostock College, merging of Lostock and Streford High and the opening of a Mega Tesco right next to the proposed academy site

No Mega Tesco in Stretford PDF Print E-mail

Tesco have submitted plans to build a MEGAstore of 166,847 sq ft (gross size) store on Chester Road opposite PC World in partnership with Trafford Council and Lancashire County Cricket Club.

Tesco already have planning permission to build a smaller store on the site, which at 48,000 sq. ft is a similar size to the new Sainsburys in Urmston and far bigger than Morrisons in Chorlton. Tesco have had this permission for over 5 years without action, so how much does Tesco really care about investing in our community?

A planning inquiry in 2006 upheld Trafford Council's refusal to grant permission to build a store of 88,095 sq. feet
because of the excessive negative effect it would have on local shops and on our environment.  Despite this, Trafford Council are now intending to sell public land to Tesco, the public money from which will then be handed to Lancashire County Cricket Club (a private members club), instead of directly benefiting local residents and local business.
