In November 2009 the government rejected the plans for a new football stadium for Everton FC that included a massive Tesco in Kirkby, Merseyside. Kirkby residents fought hard against Tesco, Everton FC and Knowlsley council and John Denham (Communities Secretary) has ruled that the proposed Tesco raised concerns over the possible harmful effects on the "vitality and viability" of local communities as well as deciding that the move would breach shopping policy which discourages major supermarket chains from taking business away from town and city centres.
This decision from the Communities Secretary gives us hope that the out-size, inappropriate Tesco being proposed in partnership with Trafford Council and Lancashire County Cricket Club can be stopped.
