Kirkby Community Wins Against Mega Tesco Plans PDF Print E-mail

In November 2009 the government rejected the plans for a new football stadium for Everton FC that included a massive Tesco in Kirkby, Merseyside. Kirkby residents fought hard against Tesco, Everton FC and Knowlsley council and John Denham (Communities Secretary) has ruled that the proposed Tesco raised concerns over the possible harmful effects on the "vitality and viability" of local communities as well as deciding that the move would breach shopping policy which discourages major supermarket chains from taking business away from town and city centres.

This decision from the Communities Secretary gives us hope that the out-size, inappropriate Tesco being proposed in partnership with Trafford Council and Lancashire County Cricket Club can be stopped. Please write now to get the planning application called in to the Communities Secretary for review byt the government - click here to see how

We are not against the development of the cricket ground, but occasional international matches do not justify year-round damage to our community and the environment. We are not anti-supermarket, but we believe that the store Tesco already has permission to build would be big enough. Read more at the Messenger website
