You might know that Tesco plan to build a MEGAstore of up to 166,000 sq ft on Chester Road (A56) opposite PC World in partnership with Trafford Council and Lancashire County Cricket Club.
Some things you might not know...
- Both Trafford Council and the Government REFUSED Tesco permission to build a store of 80,000 sq ft in 2006 because of the excessive negative effect it would have on local shops, traffic and on our environment - Trafford Council have now reversed this view.
- According to planning laws, local councils are meant to preserve existing town centres. Instead, Trafford Council are turning their backs on Stretford Mall - in favour of a superstore in the middle of a residential neighbourhood.
- To facilitate the Tesco store, Trafford Council are intending to sell Stretford High School land to Tesco - with the resulting £21m being handed to Lancashire County Cricket Club (a private members club) as a gift.
- Trafford Council are intending to force the closure of Lostock College in order to create a huge academy on the site of Stretford High School, doubling pupil numbers - right next to traffic from a massive new Tesco!
- As part of the academy plans, Trafford Council are intending to annex part of Gorse Hill Park to replace school land sold to Tesco - meaning the loss of public green space.
- Tesco regularly flount planning laws and enter into so-called community development projects, only for the promised development never to materialise - leaving communities blighted by collossal superstores that dominate and stifle the local economy.
- Not so long ago, LCCC announced they were looking into relocating the cricket club away from Stretford and possibly even away from Manchester, yet they are now preaching about being a proud part of Trafford - but only after being all but promised £21m of community money.
- Gorse Hill and Old Trafford residents, your local councillors have been fighting this proposal from the beginning - join them and voice your objections to the exploitation of our community for the profits of big business.
What does MEGA mean?
